Med-Surg -- What to expect

The following is an email from Mrs. Welborn about what to expect for Med-Surg 2nd semester. God have mercy on our souls....


- Happy New Year, Everyone! Well - the email doesn't include everyone - but I figured I came up with enough email addresses that one or two of you can share with the rest of the class - and/or post on the class blog site.... I almost have finished syllabus revisions - but since I know that the reading assignments and test schedule are really the part you guys look at - I'm sending that now - give you all some time to plan - and read.Hope everyone is getting a little rest - and getting geared back up for a busy Spring semester - we will be moving fast. There will NOT be any quizes in the med-surg semester - you've got a semester under your belt already - and you've developed some study skills....or know where the work needs to be done. Exams only - same drill as last semester. Ms Ewing and I are email pals and are working on changes to the clinical syllabus as well. No clinical the first week, so don't worry about that part..... Care plans STILL are a big deal - do DO worry about that part. The "concept map" idea you may have heard rumors about is dead - we are sticking with the care plan format you have grown to love - although we expect them to be better.....and to fit with that, the first unit in class will be a review of critical thinking and nursing process....so don't flush that information! You can review nursing process in Perry & Potter if you want - the readings are listed for Igggy (Ignatavicus) - but we are going to be fabulous at this part....ok? Fair warning - the unit that includes fluids & electrolytes is a little tougher - you had a "little" of it first semester - we are getting serious now. So the normal ranges of serum electrolytes would be a good thing to learn.....so you don't have to look up values when you see abnormals - and you know what symptoms the highs and lows of abnormal values to expect. So - time to start reading, friends - we're going to learn a LOT this semester! See you in a few weeks! JW
